A blog eh? I bet you're wondering why I would ever start a blog, adding yet another item to my already busy plate. But this is actually something I've been thinking of doing for a long time and I thought this year, of all years, would be a fitting time since today marks my fifth year in business.
So what's this blog going to be about you ask? Well, a little bit of everything. While I do operate a nutrition clinic, often the focus goes a lot deeper than food and weight loss. Health and wellness to me is such a diverse topic and from talking with hundreds of clients over these years, I've seen that the term can mean many different things to many different people.
But unfortunately for a lot of the clients I sit with, that term has been tainted and for some, it's been that way for a long time. Their views about themselves, their health, and what health and wellness actually mean are negative to say the least. Many have been treating underlying illnesses with drugs for years, without actually getting to the root cause of the problem, so the list of ailments keeps growing and growing and... well you get the point.
This blog will be a place for me to help bring light to some of the issues that exist (and there are many) with health care and weight-loss industries. A place where I can help teach people how to live a healthy lifestyle, whether weight loss fits into that equation or not, by just keeping things simple and trying not to get inundated by clever marketing and "the next best diet" or supplement*.
*On that note, you'll get a first-hand account of my top nutrition/health pet peeves, hehe. Stay tuned...
And as the name hōlistik [näture] implies, this blog will be focused around its very definition. In philosophy, holistic is characterized by comprehension of the parts of something as intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole. In medicine, it is characterized by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the physical symptoms of a disease. (Source: Google)

So a little bit about me:
I grew up on the French Shore (Baie Ste. Marie!) of Nova Scotia with my parents and my sister. We lived a pretty simple life, but growing up I never put the terms health and wellness together. I struggled with anxiety, low self-esteem, digestive problems and, when I hit my teens and well into adulthood, acne.
Looking back, my diet wasn't that great. In fact it was terrible. I remember taking white bread sandwiches to school with strawberry jam, eating LOTS of Kraft Dinner and a lot of candy. Now this is in no way a stab at my parents, it's just highlighting what I used to eat and how it affected my overall health. Had we known then the impact of diet on overall health, maybe I would have been a lot happier and healthier (mentally and physically) a lot sooner than in my thirties.
Now I live in Sussex, New Brunswick with my husband Jeremy, our son Bennett and our bulldog Brooklyn. And I'm sure hoping that what I've learned over the last few years as a Certified Holistic Nutritionist and Naturopath can not only help our family live a healthier, happier life than I remember from my childhood, but also inspire you to take control of your health in a positive and empowered way.
So thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy my blog! :)
Here we go!
